Immunity's not in the public's interest
If the phone companies didn't do anything wrong, they don't need retroactive immunity. If they did nothing wrong, then the lawsuits against them won't go anywhere.
However, if the lawsuits are allowed to proceed, we will find out exactly how far the government has gone. If the government and phone companies have acted in good faith, the courts will see that and immunity will not be necessary. If they have not, then let justice be done.
Retroactive immunity does not protect the American people. It protects the phone companies and the politicians from the consequences of their choices.
Not every phone company cooperated with the government's requests. It is time for us to find out why.
