''One Book, One Chicago" program chooses mystery novel

For the first time since the launching of the citywide celebration of reading called "One Book, One Chicago," the book selected is a mystery novel.

The newly-announced selection -- the program's 14th -- is Raymond Chandler's "The Long Goodbye." The 1954 novel is the last one he completed in his series starring private eye Philip Marlowe.

Chandler was born in Chicago, but spent most of his childhood and in youth in England. Like most of his other novels, "The Long Goodbye" is primarily set in the Los Angeles area.

Prospective readers shouldn't think they know "The Long Goodbye" if they've seen the 1973 movie version by the late Robert Altman. Altman admitted changing almost everything but the title and the characters names.
