Average down to .226

MESA, Ariz. -- Add Kosuke Fukudome to the list of Cubs players slumping at the plate.

Fukudome was 0-for-4 in Friday's 6-5 loss to the Angels. He grounded out three times and popped out, failing to get the ball out of the infield. Fukudome's average stands at .226 (7-for-31).

Japanese reporters who interviewed Fukudome said he was angry with himself.

Manager Lou Piniella tried to soften things.

"In his defense, we've been moving him in the lineup around a little bit," Piniella said. "We're trying to find out what's good for us, too, not only what's good for the player. Invariably, we'll do what's best for the player and us.

"We hope to see him in different spots in the lineup to determine what we're going to do."
