Kirk should worry about our benefits
My wife and I attended Rep. Kirk's recent town hall meeting in Libertyville. He showed the audience a fancy, tamper-proof Social Security card proposed to curb immigration and identity theft for seniors. What is really bothersome is that many of us paying into the system strongly believe we may not have those Social Security funds available to us in 20 years.
When he ran for Congress in 2000, he promised saving Social Security would be his top priority. Since he has gone to Congress, however, he has turned his back on our seniors by voting to raid billions of dollars from the Social Security surplus and supporting the Bush administration's disastrous privatization scheme. Rather than playing election-year politics by introducing this card, he should be focused on addressing the real issue here, which is maintaining retirement security for every hard-working American.
As for fraud, what is very worrisome is the fact that he could not explain at all how the federal government would keep the personal data on the card secure since there is a digital chip in it.
