Water boil lifted in Buffalo Grove

A water boil order has been lifted in Buffalo Grove after officials confirmed the water is no longer contaminated.

The order was lifted about 7 p.m. Saturday following testing of the water by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency the past two days.

"All EPA required samples confirmed that the water is safe to drink," said Dave Haisma, the village's superintendent of utilities.

According to the village, it appears as if the water had been safe all along and that the first round of testing results were actually a mistake.

Officials said the water is safe to consume and no further precautions are required.

The water boil was originally issued Friday afternoon after it appeared bacteria was found in the water during routine testing.

The testing revealed fecal coliform bacteria in three of 29 samples taken on Wednesday, officials said. The findings indicated possible contamination by human or animal waste.

Haisma said that the questionable samples were found in the northwest side of town.

After the results came in on Friday, additional samples were taken at all of the same sites, as well as several more, village health officer Brian Sheehan said.

Sheehan said he had not heard of people getting sick from the water, though a couple of doctors had called the village to say they had patients who had experienced some of the symptoms. It is not clear if that is a result of the water or other common illnesses that have similar symptoms.
