Elgin has had its fill of potholes
Elgin crews have been combing the city for potholes to patch and should have visited every street by the end of today, the city's public works director said.
John Loete said that when the weather cooperates, the department usually has between four and seven crews searching for and patching potholes.
"We are currently working Saturdays to make sure we are on top of the problem," Loete said this week.
This winter was especially rough because of heavy snow and several severe freeze-thaw cycles.
Loete said as of Wednesday, crews had surveyed seven of the city's 17 main subdivisions.
The remaining 10 were due to be completed by the end of today, he said.
"We should have been through the entire town," Loete said.
The city tries to respond to reported potholes within 24 to 48 hours. Residents can call (847) 697-3160 to report them.
Loete warned that the patching material being used now primarily works well for larger holes.
In mid- to late-April, hot asphalt for larger areas should become available as plants reopen for the season.
He also noted that some major roadways -- such as Randall Road and Route 25 north of Interstate 90 -- are not maintained by the city.
Last month, city leaders pledged to set aside $6 million more this year to repave and resurface an additional 20 to 30 miles of roads.
City Manager Femi Folarin said his staff will have a complete list of those streets available on April 7.
