Encounter brief against Maddux

MESA, Ariz. -- A Japanese reporter walked up to Greg Maddux on Thursday and asked for a word with the San Diego Padres star pitcher.

"I'm with the Japanese media," she said.

"Oh, really," Maddux said. "I never would have guessed that."

Typical Maddux. Just having fun.

Maddux got to face Fukudome only once in the Cubs' 3-2 victory. A comebacker by Derrek Lee hit Maddux on the left thigh, forcing him from the game. Fukudome said he was curious to face the future Hall of Famer but expressed disappointment he didn't get to face him a second time.

In the field, Fukudome made a leaping catch at the wall in right-center to nab a drive by Jody Gerut.

"I didn't really have to jump, but I kind of exaggerated a little bit, jumped and caught the ball," said Fukudome, hinting that he may display a showman's flair from time to time.
