Briefs: Guilty plea in break-in

A 19-year-old Rolling Meadows man has been sentenced to five years in prison for a burglary at a Rolling Meadows apartment complex. Andrew C. Kelly pleaded guilty to robbery and theft on Wednesday, prosecutors said. The burglary of the apartment at the 12 Oaks at Woodfield complex in the 400 block of Arbor Drive occurred on Nov. 7. Two other men were charged along with Kelly, accused of entering a unit in the complex where they lived through a faulty door and stealing a DVD player, a television set, computer and video game system.

Rosemont checks vehicles

The Rosemont Public Safety Department will be conducting a roadside safety checks on Higgins Road during the late evening hours Saturday. Police will be looking for alcohol-impaired drivers. Other violations that the officers will be looking for include driver's license offenses as well as equipment, insurance and seat-belt violations.

Review deadline extended

The Cook County Board of Review will be open until March 31 for Palatine Township residents to file an appeal to their recent property assessment notices. Residents of Palatine Township received these notices from the Cook County assessor in the fall of 2007. By lowering the assessed valuation of a property, residents could see a lower property tax bill. Information is at cookcountyboardofreview.com. Workshop for homeowners

Hanover Township Collector William Burke and Assessor Thomas Smogolski will co-host a homeowners workshop at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Discussion items include buying and selling homes, market value, short sales and what to do if you're facing foreclosure. Mortgage specialists will be on hand to answer questions, and Spanish translators will also be present. The workshop takes place at the township senior center, 240 S. Route 59 in Bartlett.
