Briefs: CAC highlights safety
The Elgin Area School District U-46 Citizens' Advisory Council today will host a special program at 7 p.m. in the library at Elgin High School on school safety and a new program designed to promote positive behavior among students. District Safety Coordinator John Heiderscheidt will explain how the Weapons Prevention Program works and will detail ongoing initiatives to keep students and staff safe at school. The program will also feature the Positive Behavioral Intervention & Support program. Visit www.u46cac.org or call (847) 888-5000, ext. 5040.
Water rates could rise
South Elgin trustees on Monday likely will consider a measure to raise monthly water rates by about 11 percent, or $8. Officials estimate that a typical user who pays $39 per month now would be billed about $47 after the change, which would take effect on May 1 if approved. The hike is needed to set aside money for future maintenance and improvements on pipes and other equipment. The change would not apply to the Thornwood subdivision and other western areas served by the Otter Creek Water District.
Check out Barber of Seville
A former member of the Lyric Opera Chorus will present a free program on the music and highlights from Gioachino Rossini's Barber of Seville at 2 p.m., Saturday at the Dundee Township Public Library. John Rammel, now a lecturer with the Chicago Lyric Opera Education Corps, will share the story of Figaro, the audacious barber of Seville, who uses every bit of his blarney and trickery to bring two sweethearts together. Rammel will play musical selections from the romantic comedy and discuss the history and life of the composer. Call (847) 428-3661, ext. 308, or visit dundeelibrary.com.
