Blending in quite nicely

MESA, Ariz. -- Don't worry about Kosuke Fukudome adjusting to life in the United States.

Says who? Says reliever Shingo Takatsu, who was released by the Cubs on Tuesday. Upon his exit, Takatsu was asked how Fukudome was adjusting.

"I don't think Kosuke had to adjust too much to begin with," Takatsu said. "He's doing OK. He's also blended into the team as part of the Chicago Cubs."

If there's one sign Fukudome isn't lacking for confidence, it's the No. 1 on his uniform back, says manager Lou Piniella.

"In Fukudome's case, I love the fact he took the No. 1 on his back," Piniella said. "That tells me a lot about the individual. He expects to do well. I don't think a player takes No. 1 if you have doubts. Very confident. Very confident young man."
