Open to interpretation: Artist's abstract works on display at COD

Broad sweeps of color seamlessly blend into the next, filling the large canvases painted by Kathy Burrows.

Are they cloudy sunsets? Rooms in smoke-filled, colorfully-lit piano bars? Undefined spaces in the universe?

It's really hard to say.

Much of Burrows' work is considered abstract expressionism, which means it's open to interpretation, said College of DuPage assistant art professor Marina Kuchinski.

Many of Burrows' paintings are on display in the Wings Student Gallery at the College of DuPage through Thursday.

"There's a lot of methodical manner in which she works," Kuchinski said. "She's very interested in light. If you look at the paintings you can see the light coming through."

Burrows was an art director in the publishing industry, doing book design and covers. Since her retirement, the Downers Grove woman has taken classes in sculpture, photography and painting at the Glen Ellyn-based college.
