A look at Illinois governors who resigned
SPRINGFIELD - Over the course of Illinois' history, four governors have resigned, surprisingly none directly due to scandal.
The last was Democrat Otto Kerner, who resigned in 1968 to become a federal judge. It wasn't until later that he was charged and convicted of accepting bribes related to state racetrack business he oversaw as governor.
Before Kerner, Republican Gov. Shelby Moore Cullom resigned in 1883 to become a U.S. senator.
Similarly, Republican Gov. Richard J. Oglesby resigned in 1873 also to become a U.S. senator.
The state's fourth governor, Democrat John Reynolds, resigned in 1834 to join the U.S. House.
