E. Dundee hires development point man

When Robert Skurla looks at the empty storefronts and vacant lots in East Dundee, he sees potential for retail and industrial growth.

That's exactly what the village hired him to do.

Last week, the village board appointed Skurla as the village's first economic development consultant.

For $4,000 a month, Skurla will concentrate on attracting new business to the village, as well as ensuring the current businesses in town are satisfied, said Heather Zipparro, assistant to the village manager.

"It is vital for the village to work with people who are familiar with the industry and are able to bring people in," Zipparro said. "He will work on bringing in developments to sites like Dundee Crossings and Gateway."

Skurla, who has worked with government agencies throughout the Midwest for more than 20 years, said he will work closely with village staff and the board to establish priority areas.

Most recently, Skurla worked with the Freeport Area Economic Development Commission.

"Industrial areas and retailers will be a focus since they affect retail sales taxes, and we know sales taxes are a significant part of the village's general fund," said Skurla, principal of R Skurla Associates Development Inc. in Freeport.

"There are a large number of vacancies in storefronts and properties that are accessible to a large portion of population. The village has interesting and unique needs," he said.

Village Manager Frank Koehler said the village has needs, particularly in the areas of the route 72 and 25 corridor, as well as the vacant land along Route 72.

"He brings a lot of experience and knowledge in the area of municipal economic development," Koehler said. "And for him to hit the ground running will be a big help."
