Pioneering choreographer Giordano dies

August Thomas ("Gus") Giordano, the award-winning choreographer and founder of Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, died from pneumonia Sunday in Chicago. He was 84.

"His vision, creativity and passion for jazz dance made a huge impact on dance communities, students and audiences in Chicago and throughout world," said daughters Nan and Amy Giordano in a prepared statement. Both sisters continue running the dance company and Giordano's Evanston-based dance school.

Originally a native of St. Louis, Gus Giordano joined the Marines during World War II and was assigned to entertain the troops by performing at the Hollywood Canteen and at military bases. Giordano would later perform on Broadway and TV before moving to Chicago in 1953 to open up his dance school.

Giordano founded his dance company in 1962; it has toured internationally and helped spread the jazz dance techniques that he helped to pioneer. Giordano also authored the 1975 book "Anthology of American Jazz Dance" which featured the "Giordano technique."

Giordano is survived by daughters Nan Giordano and Amy Giordano, sons Patrick and Marc Giordano and eight grandchildren.
