Dineen retirement leaves big hole

It may not have yet struck the basketball community, but March 1, we all lost one of the finest people, if not the finest coach to grace the courts of the tradition rich state of Illinois.

Beyond all the wins, state appearances and trophies what Tom Dineen has left behind is the type of legacy all coaches should aspire to. One quality, and perhaps the most important, being that he is a role model as a gentlemen.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Tom for over 30 years going back to his college days. I have also seen him grow as a coach, watching him on the opposite bench, as a referee and in the stands. One thing that always strikes me over all this time and all of his success is his humbleness.

While some coaches may be self-promoters, controversial and edgy, Tom has quietly built, from scratch, one of the finest and most respected programs in the state, often flying under the radar while others have grabbed the headlines.

Those who have followed his teams and pick up the paper following a game will notice that the players get the quotes. Philosophically it's about the players, not him.

Many thanks for all the years and family sacrifices to a true class act who will be missed.

Thanks Tom for being you!
