Bond denied for teen charged in school shooting

A Cook County judge has denied bond for a 15-year-old boy charged in the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old Crane High School junior outside the school.

Devonte Smith, who has been charged as an adult with a single count of first-degree murder, appeared in Bond Court on Sunday.

The victim, Ruben Ivy, was shot shortly after the school day ended Friday afternoon.

Chicago Public Schools spokesman Mike Vaughn said Ivy was the 16th student from the system to be fatally shot this school year.

A second Crane student was beaten with a golf club nearby in what police are calling gang-related incidents.
