Baserunning not a problem
MESA, Ariz. -- Kosuke Fukudome came to the United States with a reputation for being well-schooled in all aspects of the game, including baserunning.
"Don't compliment me too much on that," he said after Friday's 6-4 victory over the Mariners.
Fukudome legged out a double to left-center in the third inning, beating the throw to second base as he read the play. The next batter, Derrek Lee, flied to right field. Fukudome was safe at third base, but just barely, as he didn't slide.
"He knows how to run the bases," manager Lou Piniella said. "I think he got a little surprised over there on that throw to third base, where he didn't slide. He's scoots around the bases pretty good. He makes a nice turn. He cuts the angles really well. He knows how to play."
Has Piniella seen "all" of Fukudome's game yet?
"No, I don't think we have," he answered. "I don't think you'll see all of his game until the end of spring training. This is more of a feeling-out period for him and a learning period for him."
