Pats skate into Cup quarters
Matt Levey set the tone early for Stevenson's boys hockey team.
Levey's goal 38 seconds into the game helped propel the Patriots to a 5-2 win over Providence in Bensenville on Tuesday night in Blackhawk Cup state tournament.
No. 4 Stevenson (43-11-3) earned a quarterfinal berth for the second straight year and will face No. 5 St. Rita (43-12-2) at 3:15 p.m. Saturday back at the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois rink in Bensenville. The two teams have split two games this season. Stevenson won the first meeting, 2-0, while St. Rita was a 5-4 winner in the second contest.
Levey's goal was one of three Stevenson tallies in the first period. Chris Steigerwald and Chad Himley also lit the lamp.
Brian Murtha and Dan Wood added the other goals for the Patriots. Joey Pellettiere had 2 assists.
Claiming the Cup: Stevenson's Megan Bozek recorded a hat trick in leading the combined Glenbrook girls ice hockey team to the Chicago Metropolitan Hockey League Scholastic Cup championship with a 4-3 win over New Trier last Sunday.
Rachel Brown was in the nets for the win, and Maggie Brennolt recorded 2 assists.
Trio earns Blackhawk alumni honors: Forward Brian Murtha and goalie Adam Croft have been selected to the six-member 2008 Blackhawk Alumni All-Scholastic Boys Team, while defenseman Megan Bozek was chosen for the All-Scholastic Girls Team.
The all-scholastic teams selection focuses solely on the player's on-ice abilities and talents along with the player's contribution to his or her team as a player, an on-ice leader and a teammate.
More hockey hardware: Megan Bozek and fellow Stevenson skater Casie Fields were members of the Chicago Mission U19 team that won the Blackhawk state championship.
Maggie Brennolt's Team Illinois U16 team also won a state crown. Both teams advance to the USA Hockey regional championships March 14-16.
GBN wins Scholastic Cup: Glenbrook North shut out Stevenson 3-0 in the Chicago Metropolitan Hockey League Scholastic Cup championship last Sunday.
It was the second title in a row for Glenbrook North.
