Spring Brook's Animal Hour goes exotic

Exotic animals that don't usually make it to Itasca will make a rare appearance this weekend.

As part of Spring Brook Nature Center's Animal Hour, porcupines, African bush babies, skunks, owls and hawks will be featured from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturdays, beginning this week.

But no worries -- the skunks will be de-scented and porcupine quills won't pose a threat.

"We would like to just bring in people of all ages, have them come in to see some of our local animals and get up close and personal with them," program supervisor Chris Carling said. "As long as people are interested in coming, we'll keep the program going."

The free program is geared toward people of all ages, and Carling's favorite part is seeing people around animals and watching their experiences.

A different local or exotic animal will be featured each week. There also will be educational props that relate to the animal, like skulls, for people to look at and learn from.

"Some of the animals they could even hold," Carling said, "so it's more like an open discussion."

Events will either be held inside the nature center's classroom or outside when the weather's nice.

Residents can call and reserve a spot, but last minute drop-ins also are welcome. People also can stay longer and take hikes around the nature center's grounds using Discovery Trail Packs.
