Sale lets you outfit kids on the cheap

As temperatures rise, the kids will need shorts. Sundresses. Bicycles. Skates.

You can outfit them for spring and summer, without spending a bundle, at Western Avenue Elementary School's clothing resale today and Saturday.

Tuesday night, volunteers were busy in a room behind the gym, pricing clothing and putting it on hangers donated by Geneva Cleaners.

Two dollars for a pair of jeans. Three dollars for a pink Limited Too shirt. Justice sweat pants, $4.

There's Gymboree stuff, Ralph Lauren and more.

One volunteer recalled the year she saw a Strasburg-brand fancy girl's dress, which normally retail for more than $100, on sale for $6.

"Ooh. That is good," another volunteer exclaimed.

"We usually have all of the designer stuff," said Sheryl Duer, publicist for the event.

The money raised was used two years ago to purchase new computers for the school, and for a nonfiction reading program last year. A specific project has not been picked for this year's proceeds.

This is one of two resales the PTO conducts; the other is in the fall. They have been doing it since 1981.

There's baby stuff, toys, sports equipment, strollers, books, baby furniture, videos, DVDs and more. Clothing sizes run from newborn to a junior size 7. Everything is sorted by size and sex.

"Bikes are a big one in this sale," Duer said.

Forty percent of the sale price goes to the school, 60 percent to the seller. Items with a white tag will be sold for half-price Saturday.

No children under 10 are allowed in today. And no strollers are allowed, period. It's too crowded.

You have to pay with cash or by check.

The sale is from 6 to 9 p.m. today and 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the gym.

The school is at 1500 Western Ave., Geneva.
