Police ID man hit, killed on tollway
Police say a Romeoville man misjudged the speed of traffic on Interstate 90 before he was struck and killed Tuesday night.
A person driving a Toyota Camry hit James Schwertfeger, 43, at around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday on westbound I-90, now known as the Jane Addams Tollway, just east of Route 53 near Arlington Heights, said state police Master Sgt. Luis Gutierrez.
Police found no identification on Schwertfeger or inside the van. As a result, they used fingerprints to identify him on Wednesday, Gutierrez said.
A witness told authorities Schwertfeger was struck as he was trying to cross the westbound lanes of I-90 on foot.
Police said they believe the man was driving a van that had been abandoned on the shoulder of I-90. Police are not sure if the man owned the van.
The driver of the Camry was not injured and will not be criminally charged, state police have said.
All westbound lanes of I-90 were blocked at Arlington Heights Road and all north and southbound ramps to Arlington Heights Road were blocked on Tuesday night while the accident was investigated.
