Learn about siding at workshop

Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley's ReStore, 860 N. State St. in Elgin, is offering a free workshop on "Siding -- Choosing, Installing and Repairing" from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Taught by WIND 560-AM "Your House Chicago" radio show co-hosts Rich Cowgill and Dawn Tuskey, the workshop is a fun and interactive experience. Admission is free.

Like the other workshops Cowgill and Tuskey have taught thus far at ReStore, they will be certain the participants leave with a greater understanding of the process of siding installation and repair.

"While siding is certainly durable, someone may be looking to upgrade from aluminum to vinyl, or they may have damaged a portion of their siding by inadvertently placing the gas grill too close to the house for example," Tuskey said. "We will help workshop participant choose the right siding for their home and demonstrate how to repair any damage."

"Anyone interested should sign up as soon as possible. Rich and Dawn have created a great learning environment, and because of that they have developed quite a following," said Jeremy Keen, ReStore manager. "People are very comfortable with them and it seems that everyone leaves with their questions answered."

For information or to sign up for a current workshop, visit www.restoreelgin.org, call (847) 742-9905 or stop by during open hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

ReStore is a home improvement resale store, taking donated material from manufacturers, distributors, retailers, contractors and homeowners. The items are then sold at bargain prices to the general public.

Proceeds build Habitat homes in Elgin and surrounding communities. Since its grand opening in April 2006, ReStore has raised enough funds to build three homes. In addition to earning funds for home building, ReStore estimates that it has kept more than 500 tons of useable material out of area landfills.

Future workshop topics are:

• April 12: All About Doors -- types, lock sets, hinges, installing.

• May 10: Decks -- choosing materials, design, basic components.

• June 14: Sinks and Faucets -- choosing and changing.
