Jury selected for Rezko trial, but IDs a secret until today
Opening statements begin today in the political corruption trial of former top political fundraiser Antoin "Tony" Rezko.
Attorneys in the case finished picking jurors Wednesday, but the judge kept their selections under wraps until today.
U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve discussed the jury selection in private with attorneys in the case and announced afterward that a jury had been successfully selected.
She also noted there was no overlap in the potential jurors that prosecutors requested be stricken -- or removed from the jury pool --and those the defense requested be removed.
The twelve jurors and six alternates will be sworn and seated at 9 a.m. today after which opening statements will begin. Each side will take about an hour, they said, and then testimony will begin.
Rezko is charged with mail fraud, extortion and other crimes.
He is accused of using his position of influence with Gov. Rod Blagojevich to solicit kickbacks for favorable treatment.
