Elgin explores new space for artists

In the continuing efforts to build a strong arts community in the downtown area, the city of Elgin has begun exploring the feasibility of creating affordable rental space for artists to both live and work in the Center City area.

Artspace, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit organization that builds and manages affordable rental space dedicated to those working and performing in the arts, has agreed to come to Elgin to explore the potential for this project. They will meet with community leaders, key stakeholders, area arts organizations, and artists.

A public meeting with Artspace will be held at 8 p.m. today in the Heritage Ballroom at The Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way.

Artspace will discuss the project, get public input and answer questions from the public. For additional information prior to the meeting call Cherie Murphy at (847) 931-5667.

The city of Elgin is looking forward to working with Artspace and area artists to evaluate the feasibility of developing such a project here. More information about Artspace can be found on its Web site at www.artspaceusa.com.
