Bald is in at Hersey -- all for a good cause

It's March, which means winter is on its way out.

Or so hope some Hersey High School students and teachers.

Hersey will conduct two events to raise money for St. Baldrick's Foundation, which donates money for childhood cancer research.

The first Hersey event will feature teachers shaving their heads on Friday in front of the entire student body and faculty at an assembly. Student donations will be collected in buckets designated with a teacher's name on each one. The teacher collecting the most money will have his or her head shaved.

The second event will be on St. Patrick's Day where students will have their own heads shaved.

The event is sponsored by Hersey's SOS (Students Over Self) program. St. Baldrick's Foundation is a new event this year and was suggested by senior Nick Herling.

New business coming:

Arens, which manufactures control components and systems for vehicles, will be moving to Arlington Heights thanks to a 6b tax abatement recently granted by the village board.

Arens will be moving into a Center Point Properties building at 3602 N. Kennicott Ave. within the next few months, said Ken Kunin, president of the company.

The tax incentive allows a 16 percent property tax assessment level for the first 10 years, 23 percent in the 11th year and 30 percent in the 12th year. The standard rate for commercial properties is 38 percent.

Village officials approved the tax break to attract the company to Arlington Heights, which has Cook County taxes. Cheaper Lake County taxes are only about a mile away from the site.

Arens is currently located in Carpentersville. The company will be hiring more people after moving to Arlington Heights.

Game on:

Sure, your middle school math teacher knows long division, but can he shoot a long three-pointer?

The third annual South v. Thomas Staff charity basketball game will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Hersey High School.

Tickets are a $5 donation at the door and there will also be raffles and concessions. All proceeds will be donated to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

Lock your car doors:

Four cars were broken into on Saturday, according to Arlington Heights police reports. The first two cars were broken into between 9:30 a.m. and noon and were parked in the 1700 block of East Central Road. A purse, MP3 player and compact disc player were stolen. Later in the day, two cars parked in the 800 block of West Dundee Road were hit and a purse and MP3 player were stolen.

Costly fall:

The Arlington Heights village board approved a $27,000 settlement on Monday to Helene Kocker who fell on a patch of sidewalk in the northern part of the village, said Village Manager Bill Dixon. Kocker broke several bones in the fall, Dixon said.

New digs:

The village board's first meeting in the new village hall will be on April 7. While the hall opened for business in early February, it took a while for the building to get wired up to broadcast the meetings on local cable, Dixon said.
