Woman killed when car hits tree
A 32-year-old woman is dead after the car she was driving jumped a snow bank and struck a tree, Waukegan police said.
Amy Saldana, 32, was pronounced dead at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan about 9:15 a.m. Sunday by Lake County coroner officials.
Coroner officials said Saldana was a Round Lake Beach resident, but Waukegan police said she lived in Waukegan.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Dan Greathouse said Saldana was headed north on McAree Road at 8:17 a.m. when her vehicle swerved to the left, hit a snow bank, went airborne and hit a tree.
He said the car was traveling about 30 mph when it struck the tree. Saldana was not wearing a seat belt.
"The airbag didn't help because it hit her lower body, because she flew up when the car went airborne," Greathouse said. "If she was wearing the seat belt, that might have been prevented."
Saldana had a blood alcohol content of .153, nearly twice the legal limit and marijuana was found in her system during the autopsy performed Monday, he said.
Funeral arrangements for Saldana are pending.
