Briefs: Tax-prep help available
Waubonsee Community College provides tax-return preparation services for low- to moderate-income people as part of the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Tax assistance sessions are from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays at the Aurora campus, 5 E. Galena Blvd. Families with incomes of less than $40,000 are eligible for assistance, as are individuals with incomes of less than $15,000. People seeking tax help should bring a copy of their 2006 tax return (if they have one) W-2 forms and 1099s from all 2007 jobs, Social Security cards for all family members and a photo ID. Home repair aid offered
If your home needs repair but finances are tight, Mid-Valley Neighborhood Improvement Association Inc. offers assistance for limited-income homeowners in the cities or townships of Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles. Help with drug bills
Batavia Retired Senior Volunteer Project Inc. is seeking applicants for its medical assistance program, which provides credits to be used for prescription drugs at Osco Pharmacy in Batavia. The credits are awarded on the basis of need with consideration given to the applicant's income and non-reimbursed payments for prescription drugs. Applicants must be at least 65 and live within the city of Batavia, Batavia Township or the Batavia Park District. An applicant can qualify for this program with an income of up to $24,000. If the applicant has a spouse or lives with one qualified additional resident the income limit rises to $32,000 and the limit rises to $40,000 if two qualified additional residents live with the applicant. Friday night fish
The Fox River-Geneva American Legion Post 75 is hosting family fish fries from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Fridays at 22 S. Second St. in Geneva. Dinners include baked and fried fish, chicken, shrimp, scallops, chicken tenders, baked potatoes and coleslaw. There is a cash bar. Cost is $6 to $9. Kids meals for those 5 to 10 are $4.
