We must mine our own untapped oil
On Feb. 8, The Daily Herald printed an Associated Press article, "Study: Ethanol will hurt climate. Negative effect comes from converting land to biofuel crops, say researchers."
As I read the article it seems to me that converting land like Sun City in Huntley for housing may have the same effects on climate.
This study did not mention the pollution to Lake Michigan in refining crude oil nor did it compare omissions from motors using gasoline versus ethanol.
In the interest of good reporting, the Associated Press or the Daily Herald should be curious enough to put the name of the organization sponsoring this research.
Our dependence on foreign oil is one of the key problems recognized by all candidates running for president as well as the president, yet no one has the guts to say that we must start mining our own untapped oil, be it in Alaska, the Gulf, or on the coast of California.
If they suggested we start mining our own reserves, theoretical research studies will come out with disasters that have not occurred in any country mining oil.
