Flood warning, watches issued

With above-average temperatures melting the snow and rain falling Sunday and Monday, officials are keeping a close eye on water levels on the Fox River.

John Palmieri, lockmaster of the McHenry Stratton Lock and Dam, said the lower river - located between McHenry and the Algonquin dams - could see some flooding due to the quick thaw and precipitation recorded in the past 48 hours.

However, he said, water is being pushed down the river to make room for heavy water flows coming from New Munster, Wisc., which is currently listed as being about 6 inches above flood stage.

"There is always concern about flooding," Palmieri said. "But we are being proactive and trying to send water downstream to create more storage room."
