Chicago man arrested for fatal stabbing

Cook County authorities have charged a 54-year-old Chicago man with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend.

Police say the man charged Saturday, John Small, had been released from prison last year and was on parole for a 1996 aggravated arson conviction.

Authorities say 47-year-old Denise Lawrence was stabbed Thursday night in her fourth-floor South Side apartment.

They say her body was found by a friend after Small allegedly answered the door and then said he was on his way out.

Police said Small's image was captured on video surveillance leaving the building.
