Alderman enters race for Aurora mayor
The election is more than a year away, but already two Aurora aldermen have announced plans to run for mayor.
On Sunday, 4th Ward Alderman Rick Lawrence officially announced his candidacy to a full room of supporters at Walter Payton's Roundhouse, 205 N. Broadway, in Aurora.
"I ask for your support. I'm running for mayor and we're going to make this a better place to live," Lawrence said to applause.
Last month, 3rd Ward Alderman Stephanie Kifowit became the first to announce her candidacy for mayor in the April 2009 election.
The current Aurora mayor, Tom Weisner, who was elected in 2005, has not yet decided whether to seek a second term.
At Lawrence's rally Sunday, people in the audience expressed a desire for a mayor who will be more attentive to their needs and more careful with their money.
"We shouldn't have to fight our own government to know what's going on in Aurora," said 4th Ward resident Roger Earl. "(Lawrence) will stop spending money until there is a plan for how things are going to work."
Outcome-based spending -- as opposed to "throwing money" at situations -- were among the issues Lawrence spoke about.
"It's about standing up for what's right and wrong," he said. "It's about responsibility and honesty."
Many supporters said they appreciate Lawrence's willingness to ask challenging questions, even when he is the only one raising concerns.
"He questions the status quo," said Roger's wife, Elizabeth Earl.
Lawrence reiterated this concept in his speech.
"I've heard years of not asking why or why not," he said. "I'll listen to everyone's opinion, but I will also challenge people to prove their points."
Lawrence promised to be honest and receptive to residents' input, saying the door will be open to the mayor's office and administration if he holds the position.
From here, Lawrence will begin fundraising and promoting his position to the community.
