Suspect accused of murder
First-degree murder charges have been filed in connection with a carjacking that left the victim dead after authorities said he tried to stop the crime by clinging to the outside of his speeding vehicle. Eric Holmes, 36, of South Holland, was killed when he was thrown off the van after it crashed into a barrier on Chicago's Dan Ryan Expressway. Late Wednesday, prosecutors charged 31-year-old Herman Burnett of Chicago with murder and vehicular hijacking in connection with the incident. Authorities said Holmes was stopped at a gas station on Chicago's South Side when Burnett jumped into his vehicle and drove off.
