Bail denied man accuse of murder in carjacking
Bail has been denied a convicted felon who is accused of hijacking a mini-van and then killing its owner.
Thirty-six-year-old Eric Holmes of South Holland was stopped at a gas station on Chicago's South Side when a man jumped into his vehicle and drove off. Holmes tried to stop the crime by clinging to the outside of the speeding vehicle.
Prosecutors charged 31-year-old Herman Burnett of Chicago with murder and vehicular hijacking in connection with the incident.
In an effort to throw Holmes from the van, Burnett swerved back and forth across all the lanes of traffic on the Dan Ryan Expressway. Snow says Holmes slipped from the top of the van to the passenger side but maintained his grip.
Authorities say Burnett slammed the side of the mini-van into a concrete barrier, crushing the father of six.
