Carjacking victim killed after clinging to speeding van

CHICAGO -- A carjacking victim is dead after authorities say he tried to stop the crime by clinging to the outside of his speeding vehicle while it drove onto Chicago's Dan Ryan Expressway.

The Cook County medical examiner's office says 26-year-old Eric Holmes of South Holland was pronounced dead Tuesday.

Authorities say Holmes was stopped at a gas station on Chicago's South Side when a man jumped into his vehicle and drove off. Holmes grabbed the van's luggage rack and got onto the roof while the van sped onto the expressway.

A witness told police Holmes tried to open the van's door and get inside but was thrown off when the van hit a barrier and crashed.

Police say they have the carjacking suspect in custody.
