New Trier 72, Maine West 49

Senior Jimmy Orlowski and Maine West picked up where they left off on Monday night.

Orlowski hit three 3-pointers in the final quarter of the Wheeling Class 4A regional boys basketball quarterfinal to lead a comeback win over Mather.

The senior didn't cool off in the opening quarter of Tuesday's Class 4A Wheeling regional semifinal drilling three 3s and propelling No. 16 seed Maine West to a 1-point lead against No. 2 New Trier.

But New Trier inched ahead by 6 points at halftime, and then shut down the Warriors in the second half in rolling to a 72-49 victory.

New Trier (19-7) advances to Friday's 7:30 p.m. regional final against the winner of tonight's semifinal of No. 7 Hersey and No. 9 Wheeling.

Senior Stewart Turner-Jackson hit back-to-back 3s to open the game, giving Maine West a 6-0 advantage.

Then it was Orlowski turn, as the senior hit three consecutive 3s for a 17-9 lead.

"I credit our guys for coming out the way they did and landing the first punch," said Maine West coach Erik McNeill, whose team hit 6 of their 12 3-pointers in the opening quarter. "We tried to create open shots early and rode that momentum for as long as we could."

Orlowski tied for game-high scoring honors with 18 points on six 3s, finishing with a single-season school record 91.

"I have to credit (Turner-Jackson)," said Orlowski, "he hit his first two 3s and it gave everybody confidence."

Senior Tim McCrary scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half, and senior Peter Boehm added 13 to give New Trier a 41-35 lead.

"We were fortunate to be ahead at the half," said New Trier coach Rick Malnati. "You're not going to see a shooting barrage like that too often."

New Trier then switched from a zone to a man-to-man in the second half and allowed only 14 points.

Sophomore Alex Rossi scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half for New Trier.

"Our intensity and focus, the way we came out … that's everything I could ask for," added McNeill. "But it's tough to maintain that for four quarters against a team like New Trier."

Senior Adis Kadiric added 13 points for Maine West.

Lake Zurich 61, Stevenson 45: Connor Mooney (16 points), Brandon Kunz (13) and Chas Evans (12) led No. 14 Lake Zurich (17-11) to the upset of No. 4 Stevenson (19-8) in the Palatine 4A regional semifinal.
