Clinton is qualified for the presidency

We must congratulate the NIU president, his staff, and campus police team for such a timely lockdown during the Valentine's Day shootings.

NIU campus Police Chief Don Grady did an incredible job training his staff before that tragic day and communicating to the public afterward. All the law enforcement teams and hospitals, ambulance emergency teams were so coordinated and effective. Great job.

Why can't our government in Washington be that efficient?

• Because Congress no longer works for us, the U.S. citizen, but for big business. Place a card entry system with a U.S. Marine on each door to Congress to keep out all the people that don't work there (lobbyists). We may need lobbyists, but have them see the senators and congressmen in the evening to wine and dine, not on the time they are working for the citizens who voted them in office.

• Because legislators are afraid of placing luxury taxes on gas-guzzling vehicles and all large-engine pickups, SUVs and RVs.

• Consider for the next two congressional elections, elect the opponent running against the senator or congressman in office, except for the 5 or 6 percent really good ones that are listening to the citizens of this once great country.

The election: There are many qualifications for a person to be a U.S. president. Here are a few I believe in:

• Needs experience as a politician (congressman and/or senator or governor).

• Hopefully a veteran.

• Needs to be a great presidential speaker to deal with foreign countries. In my life time of nearly 80 years, President Kennedy and Sen. Obama are tied. Kennedy made the biggest mistake in my lifetime (Bay of Pigs) until the president we have now (Iraq). I will not fall for lack of experience no matter how smoothly Sen. Obama speaks.

Sen. John McCain, whom the nation and I have great respect for, may be highly qualified but has some of the same ideas as Carl Rove and President Bush. Why would I vote for Sen. McCain if he lost to Mr. Bush before?

I don't know how this Democratic primary will play out, but I believe this great nation should be intelligent enough to start considering a lady for president.

We have one, fully qualified, that lived in the White House for eight years with a husband that brought this country out of a huge deficit and left with a large surplus. Sen. Clinton is well-qualified and a presidential speaker.
