One dead in Tri-State crash

One person was killed and another was injured early Sunday morning in a one-car accident on the northbound Tri-State Tollway, Illinois State Police officials said.

Passenger Billy Joe Dela Cruz, 28, was pronounced dead after being transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, according to police.

The vehicle's driver, 25, was taken to Lutheran General as well, and police said his medical condition is unknown.

Officials said no charges have been made.

The accident was reported to state police at 4:01 a.m. Officials said the driver lost control of the vehicle in the left lane and struck a portable message board on the shoulder, as well as the median wall.

The car stopped when it hit a pole protruding from the median wall, police said.

One lane was closed on the highway while officials secured the scene. All lanes were open in both directions by 7:22 a.m., police said.
