Man admits to shooting
A former Chicagoan who spent decades living under an assumed name in Canada has pleaded guilty to shooting a Chicago police officer in 1969. In exchange for his guilty plea to an aggravated battery charge, 58-year-old Joseph Pannell was sentenced Friday to 30 days in jail and two years' probation. He also agreed to donate $250,000 to a fund set up for the families of injured or fallen officers. Money for the donation came from Pannell supporters in Toronto and defense attorneys in the Chicago area.
