MESA, Ariz. -- The marquee matchups during Thursday's round of "live" batting practice were Kosuke Fukudome against Carlos Zambrano and Fukudome vs. Kerry Wood.

In 6 pitches against Zambrano, Fukudome tapped a swinging-bunt grounder toward third base and a grounder to short. Against Wood, he grounded to short and popped one against the top of the batting cage.

"I didn't want to hit him," Wood said. "I almost told him to get out of there. At that time in my outing, I was just getting ready to start working on my cutter in to lefties, and he walked in there. I was like, 'He's the last guy … I don't want to hit this guy.'

Fukudome has been careful and cautious in his approach so far. "He's behind the pitchers right now as are all the hitters," manager Lou Piniella said.
