Joliet Catholic 67, St. Viator 61 (OT)
St. Viator's boys basketball team was inches away from ending a 4-game losing streak in its East Suburban Catholic Conference finale Thursday night at Joliet Catholic.
Sophomore Alan Aboona came around a screen with Viator trailing by 2 points in the final seconds of regulation. But his shot was only good for a tie as his toes were just on the 3-point line.
Joliet Catholic (12-13, 5-8) never trailed in overtime of a 67-61 victory.
Aboona scored a career-high 18 points and hit three 3s for Viator (9-16, 3-10).
"At the right times he was very aggressive trying to make things happen," said Viator coach Joe Majkowski.
Senior Mike Landuyt scored 16 points but Viator was hurt when he fouled out with two minutes left in regulation. Jim Platania added 10 points and three 3s.
ESCC scoring leader Pat Devine led the Hilltoppers with 25 points. But Majkowski said Brian Budzinski "killed us" with 21 points.
Viator opens its postseason at 6 p.m. Monday in the Glenbrook North Class 4A regional against Leyden.
