Truck driver charged in crash that killed siblings

A 45-year-old Darien man has been charged in the Jan. 24 accident in Huntley that killed a brother and sister from Elgin.

Gustavo P. Gomez has been charged with reckless homicide in the crash that claimed the lives of Sergio Espinosa and his sister, Rosalina Rodriguez.

Around 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 24, Gomez was driving a semitrailer truck north on Route 47 when he struck Espinosa's 2004 Hyundai as Espinosa was trying to turn left onto Route 47 from Oak Creek Parkway, police said.

Espinosa died at the scene and Rodriguez was later pronounced dead at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.

Huntley police and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team determined that Gomez ran a red light before hitting Espinosa, who was turning left on a green arrow.

Alcohol did not contribute to the accident, police said.

Gomez posted $2,500 bond Tuesday.
