Blank wall calling for your ideas
Let's say you have a great idea for a huge mural, just not the artistic ability to pull it off.
Well the Arlington Heights Legion Post No. 208 is looking for you.
The post is hosting a design contest for the brick wall facing Pioneer Park. Any Arlington Heights resident is eligible, but special consideration will be given to students.
The mural will cover the length of the American Legion Post and face Pioneer's soccer fields.
The topic of the mural is "Americanism in Sports" and the prize is $250. The deadline is April 30 and the winner will be announced on May 13. Entries should be sent to: American Legion Post 208, Attn: Bill Allen, 121 Douglas, Arlington Heights, IL 60004.
Speaking of Pioneer Park, it will host an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday. It's free and open to all.
Sticking it to the new guy: Call it hazing for local government officials. The Arlington Heights village board appointed the village's newest trustee, John Scaletta, to the building code review board on Monday. Scaletta was elected in April 2007.
"It's a great honor for Trustee Scaletta," said Village President Arlene Mulder with more than a trace of sarcasm.
Trustee Helen Jensen served on the building code review board for nine years before handing the post over to Scaletta.
"It's a learning experience, let me tell you," Jensen said.
Cleaning all the village hall toilets with a toothbrush may be tough, but at least it doesn't last nine years.
Oscar picks: The Daily Herald's movie critic, Dann Gire, will be at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library at 7 p.m. tonight to discuss this year's Oscar nominations and predict some winners and losers. To reserve your seat register online at www.ahml.info under "programs" or call (847) 392-0100.
Happy anniversary: Sherwin Hardware, at Campbell and Wilke, is celebrating its 20th anniversary on Friday and Saturday. Swing by for some birthday cake, ice cream, balloons, gifts, raffles and more.
Cholesterol check: Arlington Heights will host a cholesterol clinic from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. The screenings will be held in the health department, located on the first floor of village hall at 33 S. Arlington Heights Road. Total and HDL cholesterol screening are $15. Total, HDL, and LDL cholesterol screening are $20. This test requires a 14-hour fast. Call (847) 368-5760 to make an appointment.
