Batavia planning for 175th bash
There's going to have to be a huge cake in Batavia to hold all these candles.
This fall, the city will celebrate its 175th anniversary.
Although historical documents don't pinpoint a specific date, they do make references to incorporation in the fall in 1833, 175th anniversary committee chairman Bob Popeck said.
The committee is planning a weekend of events to celebrate the anniversary over Labor Day weekend.
Nothing is finalized, but ideas include a community picnic, parade, an interfaith church service, fireworks and the performance of a play on the history of Batavia.
The play, "A Peek Into the Past," was written for the city's 150th anniversary but wasn't performed, Popeck said.
There might also be a display of the history of different organizations and groups in town.
"We're advancing along quite well, but nothing is locked in yet," Popeck said. "The committee is very excited about this."
The city approved plans for a half-marathon for that weekend earlier this month.
In the next few months, organizers plan to set up a Web site and phone number with more information.
Volunteers are still needed to work on different parts of the celebration.
