Sculpture that stood outside Newberry Library stolen

Chicago police say a stainless-steel sculpture that stood at the entrance of the Newberry Library since 2005 was stolen over the weekend.

Newberry Library president David Spadafora says "Umanita," which means humanity in Italian, was stolen between Saturday night and Monday afternoon, when a security officer realized the 6-foot-high, 150-pound contemporary sculpture was missing.

Police Department spokesman Officer Marcel Bright says the brazen act is under investigation.
