We're only as safe as neighbors allow
We buy guns like we buy candy bars.
Professional law enforcement get rigorous and continual training on how to handle weapons.
But almost any citizen in the USA can buy a gun and disappear. With no required training, instruction or renewal requirement, they are a danger to us all.
Far from guaranteeing our liberty, we are instead at the mercy of our craziest neighbor. All industrialized nations have strict weapon laws. No matter how difficult it would be, why not a mental health/weapons registry?
There is talk of allowing all students to carry guns as a deterrent. That logic doesn't make sense. Millions of people cannot handle their emotions while driving a car. Instead of using an obscene gesture, they would start shooting.
To quote a local community leader: The fact that virtually anyone can obtain (and stockpile) lethal firearms is a travesty to our notion of "civilized" society.
We are all only as safe as our zaniest neighbors allow us to be, and that's not a comforting notion.
