One dead, two officers injured in shootout

One person is dead and three others, including two police officers, were injured in a shootout at a suburban Chicago motel.

Timothy Kaufmann of the Burbank Fire Department says one officer, who was shot in the hand, was also shot twice in the chest. The bullets didn't penetrate his body because the officer was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Police say the other officer suffered a minor leg wound.

Burbank police were called to a motel on a report last night of a man with a gun in one of the guest rooms. When police arrived they were fired upon from inside the room.

Police returned fire, injuring two occupants of the room.

Police would not say what precipitated the shooting. Nor have they identified the dead man, nor the civilian injured.
