George Washington -- From Mt. Vernon to Washington, D.C.: Actor Terry Lynch brings George Washington to life in his one-man play at 3 p.m. today in the Friends Room on the first floor. All ages are welcome.

Babysitting Clinic: Kids in grades 6-8 can learn babysitting skills by attending sessions featuring entertainment of children, infant and child care, fire safety and babysitter's safety. The program runs from 4-5 p.m. on five consecutive Tuesdays beginning Feb. 19 in meeting Room A on the first floor. Attendance at all sessions is required. (R-YS)

Stories and More: At 4 p.m. Thursday, the library will host stories, crafts and related activities for children ages 5-7. (R-YS)

Patchouli: Acoustic folk duo Patchouli bring their original brand of music to the Des Plaines Public Library at 2 p.m. Sunday. Using acoustic guitars, basses, marimbas and percussion, their music is influenced by worldwide folk styles. Registration is required for this free concert.

Heart health: Learn about heart failure and heart health from Jean Mau, the Advanced Practice Nurse for Heart Failure at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, who will present "Matters of the Heart" at 7 p.m. Feb. 27. Registration is required for this free program.

Mau will give an overview of heart disease, how to assess your risk factors and what to do to improve them. Heart tips on eating, exercise and risk factor modification will be provided.

Story Explorers: Kids in grades 3-5 will get together at 4 p.m. Feb. 28 to participate in theme-based activities including stories, crafts and a snack. (R-YS)

Mad Hatters: The Junior League of Chicago's Mad Hatters will perform at 11 a.m. March 1. The 30-minute performance promotes reading to children ages 3 to 9. This is a drop-in program; no registration is required.

Members of the Junior League's Mad Hatters' Children's Theater Project perform songs, skits and poems to encourage kids to read and become familiar with the library. Children may become Mad Hatters by bringing their own hat creations or wearing one of the favorites provided at the performance.

Ongoing Book Sale: Friends of the library sponsor an ongoing book sale on the first floor of the library during regular library hours.

E-mail and Internet Practice Sessions: A librarian will assist with registering for e-mail, using e-mail, basic Internet searching or finding items in the library catalog. Call (847) 376-2841 for dates and times.

Tax forms: The Des Plaines Public Library offers a wide variety of free forms and publications with which to do your 2007 income taxes.

Federal forms available on the fourth floor of the library include the 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ, plus their instruction booklets. Several other schedules are also available.

In addition to the 1040 form for the State of Illinois, the library also carries several other state tax forms, including Schedule ED and Credit for K-12 Education Expenses.

If you do not find the form or instructions you are looking for, check a master set on the fourth floor. Many forms can be photocopied at a cost of 10 cents per page. Or, ask Reference Desk staff on the fourth floor to print forms, instructions or publications for the same price.

You also can use the library's computers to read and/or print tax forms. Go to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Web site at www.irs.gov or to the Illinois Department of Revenue at www.iltax.com. Many tax forms and publications can be printed from these sites, which also include information about electronic tax filing.
