Late 6-point lead slips away from UIC
Cooper Land made 2 free throws with seven seconds remaining to push host Wright State past Illinois-Chicago 52-51 Saturday night.
UIC's Flames (14-12, 8-7 Horizon League) led 49-43 with 4:07 left after a 3-pointer by Josh Mayo (16 points). But Wright State (19-6, 11-4) went on a 7-0 run to take a 50-49 lead. The Flames retook the lead on Scott Vandermeer's tip-in with 19 seconds left, but Vandermeer fouled Land with seven seconds left.
UIC hurried the ball down the floor but was unable to get off a shot.
SIU 74, Wichita St. 67 (OT): Bryan Mullins had 16 points and Randal Falker had 14 points and 13 rebounds as visiting Southern Illinois (14-12, 9-6 Missouri Valley) beat Wichita State (10-16, 3-12).
Indiana St. 76, Illinois St. 72: Osiris Eldridge scored 34 points and hit 7 of 9 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough as Illinois State (18-8, 10-5 Missouri Valley) lost at Indiana St. (12-13, 7-8).
The Redbirds, after hitting 5 of 8 beyond the arc in the first half, managed just 2 of 8 in the second against a tougher Indiana State defense that allowed just 32 points after the break.
Bradley 87, Creighton 59: Jeremy Crouch scored 20 points and pulled down 7 rebounds as host Bradley (15-12, 8-7 MVC) defeated Creighton (17-8, 8-7). The Braves led 46-26 at halftime and finished 13 of 28 from 3-point range. Daniel Ruffin added 16 points and 9 assists. Creighton shot just 34.4 percent from the floor and was outrebounded 41-30..
Detroit 56, Loyola 53: Aric Van Wheeldon's 3-pointer brought Loyola within 54-53 with 14.1 seconds left, but Jon Goode (23 points) made a pair of free throws and partially blocked J.R. Blount's desperation 3-point attempt in the closing seconds for visiting Detroit (7-18, 3-12 Horizon). Loyola fell to 9-16, 5-10.
Murray St. 67, EIU 56: Jake Byrne led Eastern Illinois (5-21, 4-14 Ohio Valley) with 16 points, but the visiting Panthers shot just 40 percent from the field to lose for the fourth time in five games.
