St. Charles North 60, South Elgin 49

Tim Janeway found his shooting touch Friday night.

The rest of his St. Charles North boys basketball teammates did as well. And that proved to be a nightmare for South Elgin.

Janeway went 4-for-5 from behind the arc and the North Stars shot 58 percent in a 60-49 Upstate Eight Conference victory over the Storm in South Elgin.

"I've had a rough shooting year. It's been coming back the last week in practice," Janeway said. "I'm been working on it a little bit. It's getting a little better."

Janeway scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half. The senior made 7 of 10 shots, including hitting three key 3-pointers in the second half when it looked as if South Elgin might get back in the game.

The Storm (11-12, 3-6) cut a 13-point deficit down to 39-32 with 2½ minutes left in the third quarter. After a timeout, Janeway hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to increase the lead back into double figures. In the fourth quarter, the Storm got within 6, 48-42, with an 8-0 run with 5:30 remaining. Janeway then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put the game away.

"It seemed going down the stretch they made every big shot," Storm coach Chaz Taft said. "Janeway made big shot after big shot."

Janeway was the key to North's second half. Zach Hirsch was just as important in the first.

The left-handed shooting junior went 4-for-4 from 3-point land -- all from the left corner. Janeway and Hirsch went a combined 8-for-9 from behind the arc.

"We were hot," North coach Tom Poulin said. "We were able to find our guys and get them open for quality looks."

For the game, North (15-10, 7-3) went 18-for-31 from the field. Janeway added 9 rebounds. Jonathan DeMoss finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds for the North Stars, who out-rebounded the Storm 32-18.

"We've had different guys step up every game and hit shots when we need to," Janeway said.

South Elgin was not as hot from the floor. The Storm shot 19-for-58 (34 percent).

Josh Glenn led South Elgin with 15 points, all coming on 3-pointers. Daniel Lopez added 9 points.
