Several of the killed and wounded were from area suburbs

At least four of the five NIU shooting victims were from Chicago-area towns. Several other local residents were among those injured.

The five victims, as identified by the DeKalb and Winnebago counties coroners offices are Daniel Parmenter, 20, of Westchester; Gayle Dubowski, 20, of Carol Stream; Catalina Garcia, 20, of Cicero; Ryanne Mace, 19, of Carpentersville; and Julianna Gehant, 32, of downstate Mendota.

Other area students were reported among the wounded.

• According to Channel 2, News, Troy Chamberlain, of Sycamore, was wounded. One Sycamore High School senior said Chamberlain had been an editor for his high school's newspaper, the Spartan Voice.

• A family member confirmed that Patrick Korellis, a 22-year-old senior from Lindenhurst, was shot twice by the gunman. Korellis' former Spanish teacher at Antioch Community High School, Shari Demeritt, said she had Patrick as a student for two years and he was one of her favorites.

"He is just a doll," she said. "He was my shinning star, an A-plus student. He has so much opportunity and potential and is very bright. I hope the reports I'm hearing tonight, that he is in good condition, are true and he will be OK."

• Jorge Martinez, of Elgin, told the Daily Herald that Maria Ruiz Santana, also of Elgin, suffered gunshot wounds to the chest. Martinez, a long-time family friend of Santana, heard the news from his mother.

Santana was airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. She was in surgery Thursday night and was listed in critical condition.

Martinez said Santana, a 2006 Larkin High School graduate, is a junior majoring in criminal justice at Northern University. The two had spoken Thursday morning, when Martinez called to wish Santana a happy Valentine's Day.

"She just mentioned that she didn't have any big plans except that boyfriend was visiting and they were going out to dinner," Martinez said.

• Student Ah-Num Rahman was wounded and brought via ambulance to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove Thursday night where she underwent surgery, ABC 7 reported.

She had multiple gunshot wounds, including to her right arm and right eye.

The NIU sophomore was in some pain but she was able to talk, her father said.

"The doctors have taken care of her at this time and given her medicine and all that so she is a little bit in pain because of the shots and all," Wasif Rahman told the station.

• Jeremy Walker, who attended Belvidere High School, reportedly was wounded on the neck or side of the face and is expected to fully recover.

• Friends of Ryne Erickson, of Des Plaines, confirmed that he was among those shot. His condition was unknown.

• Former Rolling Meadows High School football player J.D. Donohue was shot in the neck and shoulder, but is going to be fine. He was able to escape with his girlfriend from the classroom. The shooting comes several years after he suffered a stroke as a result of a high school football game injury and recovered.

• Samantha Dehner, sophomore from Carol Stream, was wounded.

• Jeff Malina, junior from Glenview, was wounded.

Dehner's and Malina's conditions were unknown.
